LED and Autumn Actives: How to Use Light Therapy Alongside Retinol and Peels

The Déesse PRO editorial team shares practical guidance on getting the most from professional LED light therapy at home.

Autumn is the season actives come back. Lower UV levels and cooler weather make it the sensible time to reintroduce retinol, book a course of peels, or restart the resurfacing work that gets paused over summer.

It is also the point where people most often ask whether LED and actives can share a routine. They can. The sequencing just matters.

LED and Autumn Actives: How to Use Light Therapy Alongside Retinol and Peels

Why the two work well together

Retinol and acids work by accelerating cell turnover, which is effective but comes with a well-known cost: a stretch of dryness, flaking and sensitivity while skin adjusts. LED works differently, supporting the skin's own repair processes rather than stripping or resurfacing anything, which is why the two are complementary rather than competing.

Used together thoughtfully, LED gives skin support during exactly the weeks that actives are asking the most of it.

Sequencing LED around a retinol routine

The straightforward approach is to keep them on the same evening but in the right order: cleanse, LED session on clean dry skin, then apply your retinol afterwards. LED needs bare skin to work on, and applying actives beforehand serves no purpose.

If your skin is in the early weeks of building retinol tolerance, alternate instead. Use retinol on two or three evenings, and on the off nights run a session in the Calming mode (blue and green light) to help skin look less reactive between applications. Many people find this makes the build-up phase considerably more comfortable.

After a peel or a professional facial

This is where LED earns its place most obviously. The Post Procedure mode on the PRO by Déesse PRO combines near-infrared (830nm) with red (630nm) and blue (415nm) specifically for skin that has just been through something intensive.

Check with your practitioner on timing: most are happy for LED to be used in the days following a peel, and many use it in clinic immediately afterwards for the same reason. What you should not do is stack a strong at-home acid, a professional treatment and a full active routine in the same week and expect LED to compensate.

The simple rule

Actives do the resurfacing. LED supports the recovery. Keep them in that order, give skin a calming session on the nights it is not being asked to turn over, and autumn's active season becomes far less of a trade-off between results and comfort.
